If we want safer communities, stronger democracies, healthier young people, and a more humane future, we have to teach the skills and values that make peace possible.”

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, September 15, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- As peacefulness continues its worldwide decline, the Global Peace Education Network (GPEN) has opened registration for the Global Peace Education Day 5th Annual Online Conference. This free international gathering will be held Sunday, September 20, 2026, online via Zoom, from 11 am EDT until 2 pm EDT. The conference features leaders, scholars and artists sharing approaches to peacebuilding that can be applied in communities, schools, organizations, and public life. The Global Peace Education Network promotes a simple message: “Peace is learnable.”

Communities across the world face violence, polarization, trauma, forced displacement, and ecological strain, with devastating economic consequences. According to the Global Peace Index published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, 119 countries are less peaceful today than they were in 2008. Conflict is the main reason. The report says there were 61 active state-based conflicts in 2024, the highest number since World War II, and nearly double the number 15 years ago. It also notes that spending on peacebuilding and peacekeeping is a small fraction – only 0.5 percent of total military spending.

As conflicts expand, Global Peace Education Day offers something urgently needed: a serious, hopeful, practical response. “Peace education is no longer optional,” said David Weinberg, CEO of the Global Peace Education Network. “If we want safer communities, stronger democracies, healthier young people, and a more humane future, we have to teach the skills and values that make peace possible. This conference brings together people from across the world who are showing that peace can be learned, modeled, and built.”

This year’s conference is organized around the National Peace Academy’s Five Spheres of Peace: personal, social, political, institutional, and ecological. Together, these five spheres offer a practical framework for understanding peace not as an abstract ideal, but as something that can be taught, practiced, embedded in institutions, and lived in daily life.

Hosted by Dr. Marty K. Casey, founder of the UnGUN Institute in St. Louis, Missouri, the 2026 conference centers on the theme “Peace Education for Everyone, Everywhere.” Dr. Casey’s role as host adds a powerful dimension to the event. Her work at the UnGun Institute focuses on disarming trauma and helping individuals, families, and communities heal.
